Gary Frederick Torrey, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Heritage Specialty Care. Services: noon Saturday, June 24, at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church, by Dr. Timothy Chavers. Burial: Guttenberg Cemetery at a later date. Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to noon at the church, prior to the service. Teahen Funeral Home and Cremation is serving the family.
Gary is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dianne; daughters, Marsha Torrey (Mark Franks) and Susan (Rick) Karns, both of Cedar Rapids; siblings, Harvey (Karen), Merlin (Judy), Janet (Bill) Kruse, Lyle (Marie), Kevin (Diane) and Bob (Kathy); many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Marlyn (Laurel) Bacon; sisters-in-law, Becky Bacon and Cheryl Torrey; and adopted sisters, Wilma Macalalag and Doris Hotop.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stillborn daughter, Elaine; in-laws Walter and Wanda Bacon; brothers-in-law, David and Wayne Bacon; and sister-in-law, Marylou Champion.
Gary was born on Oct. 25, 1944, in Manchester, son of Harold and Gracie Harbaugh Torrey. He attended Guttenberg High School. Gary married Dianne Bacon on June 8, 1968, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. For 43 years, he was a forklift operator at Quaker Oats, retiring in 2010.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing in Guttenberg, camping and relaxing outside whenever he could. He also liked classic cars and loved spending time with his family. Gary enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends at Burger King and having lunch with friends at the Olive Tree Restaurant. Gary was a ten year survivor of open heart surgery and a 5 year dialysis survivor. He will be missed by his friends and family.
