Gary 'Deadeye' Annis
GARY L. "DEADEYE" ANNIS Oelwein Gary L. "Deadeye" Annis, 73, of Oelwein, formerly of Cascade, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, at the Oelwein Health Center. Friends and relatives of Gary may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade at a later date. Gary was born June 5, 1945, in Central City, Iowa, the son of Jack and Marie (Dudley) Annis. He received his education at Central City and Cascade Elementary schools and Monticello High School. On April 16, 1966, he was united in marriage to Carol Leytem at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade. He was a long distance truck driver for Dawes Transport Inc. for several years. He was the recipient of the company's "Driver of the Year Award," of which he was very proud. He later owned and operated his own trucking company, RTN (which were the first initials of his three grandchildren), until his retirement in 2007. Being surrounded by his family and friends was a big part of his life. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, often reminiscing of his life growing up. You could usually find Gary at a restaurant/truck stop or the local pub having a friendly cup of coffee or a beer with the guys, while entertaining them with his wittiness, jokes and one-liners. He is survived by his two sons, Brian (Keri) Annis of Cedar Rapids and Scott (Shelley) Annis of Central City; three grandchildren, Rebecca Annis, Tyler Annis and Nate Annis; and two brothers, Keith Annis of Oelwein and Dennis (Sherry) Annis of Fairbank. He was preceded in death by a son, Rick Annis on Oct. 8, 1987; his father, Jack Annis on Jan. 5, 1982; his mother, Marie Annis on Oct. 8, 1978; and a nephew, Corey Annis on Aug. 7, 2010.
