Gary Cuckler, 75, died on Friday, Jan. 15, 2020, at his home following a sudden illness.

There will be no services at this time. A private family celebration of life will be held in the spring.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Cathy (Hall) Cuckler; his children, Todd Cuckler, Stacey (Marty) Burlage, all of Monticello, Mike Maurice, Austin, Texas, Tracy ( Matt) Showalter, Cheney, Wash., andScott (Ronnie) Maurice, Denver, Colo.; 13 grandchildren, Courtney (Derek) Vandenberg, Kelsey (Chris) Castek, Jesse Iben, Sydney and Macey Burlage, Race Cuckler, Zeb and Mazzy Maurice, Jackson, Joseph and Jillian Showalter, Sheldon and Quinn Maurice; and great-grandchildren, Gavin Vandenberg and Baby Castek expected in April; two brothers, Lance Cuckler and Duane Cuckler; and a brother-in-law, Mike Hall. Gary is also survived by his faithful companion and sidekick, his beloved dog, Raven.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Bill and Blanche Hall; a son-in-law, Jon Iben; and a brother-in-law, Billy (Redjack) Hall.

Gary Eugene Cuckler was born Sept. 22, 1945, in Denver, Colo. He was the son of David E. and A. Lois (Bryan) Cuckler. He graduated from the Monticello Community Schools, with the Class of 1963. He married Pam Petersen in 1967. The couple later divorced. He was employed at Cuckler Building Systems until 1983 when he and Chris Sasina started Commander Buildings. In 1990, Gary and Cathy were married and along with their five children began a new life together. In 1995, Gary retired from Commander and devoted the rest of his life to developing his rural property, working on the Burlage farm (he had a particular fondness for spearing and stacking the bales), and watching three generations of children grow in his ever-expanding family. He and Raven could be found driving through the countryside on their daily route, which they both so enjoyed. Cathy and Gary loved spending time together hiking in the woods along the Maquoketa River searching for treasures. They also shared a love of antiques, rocks and boulders of any kind and all things old. Although he was a very private individual, he always enjoyed sharing a cup of coffee and a chocolate frosted doughnut with special friends, Steve and Darcy Kraus.

Gary will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
