Gary Allen Svec, 83, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on February 22, 2024. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Czech National Cemetery.
Gary was born on April 25, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, the son of George and Rose (Lana) Svec. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, class of 1958 and Coe College with degrees in Business and Psychology in 1962. Gary was united in marriage to Judy Presson on November 18, 1962, at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church. He worked at Rockwell Collins and General Electric, where he was proud to be a part of the Apollo, Mercury, Gemini and Saturn Programs in conjunction with NASA. Following he worked at Control Data Corp – NSA and Northland Financial for many years. He completed his working career at Lefebure, Van Meter and Nordstrom. Gary was a gemologist working in the family business, Iowa Diamond Tool Company and Royal Jewelers. He was a member of the El Kahir Shrine. He had a lifelong interest in the Space Program. He also enjoyed racing boats, performing magic, being involved with his grandson at Bruce Taekwondo Academy, and most of all spending time with his family, especially the grandkids.
Gary is survived by his wife Judy; his children Michelle (Dennis) Greif, Deborah Aarhus; his grandchildren Ariel Aarhus (Caleb Saulsberry), Otto Aarhus, Gideon Prockish; his sister Marilyn (David) Popelka; sister-in-law Jeanne Dotzauer; brother-in-law Jim Presson; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
