Gary A. Michalec, 64, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at the Humboldt Care Center North in Humboldt, Iowa, after a long battle with dementia. A Celebration of Life open house will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at St. Ludmila's Social Hall, 211 21st Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
Gary was born June 3, 1956, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Rudolph and Francis (Bammert) Michalec. He attended Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. Gary was united in marriage to Karen Villhauer on February 18, 1983, they later divorced. Together, they welcomed two daughters: Angela and Julia. Gary worked at Keller-Hull and Pepsi Co. for several years. He married his current wife, Jennifer Werner, on June 2, 2001.
In his free time, Gary enjoyed camping, playing softball, bowling, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers.
Gary is survived by his wife, Jennifer Michalec of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four daughters, Angela (Travis) Salter of Marion, Iowa, Julia Michalec (Dustin) of Palo, Iowa, Ryann Nuss (Jen) of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jenny Nuss (Nate) of California; two grandchildren, Gavin and Camden Salter; brothers, Rick (Kathy) Michalec of Florida and Larry (Linda) Michalec of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Margaret; and two brothers, Rudy "Butch" and Jim.
Memorials may be directed to his daughters, Angela and Julia.
