Garthwaite, L. Agnes
L. Agnes Garthwaite, 88, a resident of Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, formerly of Dubuque and Bloomington, Wis., died at the care center on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial: 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Linwood Cemetery Chapel, Dubuque.
Survivors include her sons, Duane (Linda), Gary (Betty) and Elgie (Mary) Garthwaite; daughter, Mary Weber (Vern Lahr) of Marion; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Bremer of Davenport; and sister, Mary Gordon, of Davenport.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, George and Robert Bremer.
Agnes was born April 27, 1921, in Shamrock, Okla., the daughter of Simon and Fannie (Cross) Bremer. She moved to Dubuque, Iowa, in 1923, where she attended school. Agnes married Elgie C. Garthwaite on Feb. 10, 1940. Elgie died in April 2007. She moved to Bloomington, Wis., in 1943, where she farmed with her husband. Agnes was employed with the Bloomington school system for 20 years. She moved to Marion, Iowa in 1975 and was employed by the Winslow House Care Center from 1976-1986 as a food service supervisor. Agnes was a past member of the Eastern Star in Bloomington, and had served as a Worthy Matron. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Marion. Agnes enjoyed sewing and handicrafts, and loved her grandchildren and her many cats.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Agnes' memory.
