Garst "Vic" Tritle died Dec. 30, 2014, after a long illness. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 1, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel from 4 to 7 p.m., with a vigil service at 4 p.m. Mass services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at. St. Jude Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Military honors by American Legion Post 727 will follow directly after Mass at the church. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Vic was born July 24, 1927, in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Excelsior High School in May 1945. He married Alice Lehn on Dec. 9, 1950.
Vic is survived by Alice, his wife of 64 years; four children, Mike (Jean) Tritle, DeKalb, Ill., Patrick (Daphne) Tritle, Albuquerque, N.M., Kathy (Joe) Nollinger, Oak Lawn, Ill., and Carolyn (John) Kuykendall, Crystal Lake, Ill.; his sister, Joy; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Irma Tritle; and sisters, Karleen and Lanell.
Vic served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. Graduating from Cal Flyers in 1949, with a degree in aviation maintenance administration, he then served in the Air Force Reserve from 1949 to 1950. He was employed by Hunter Flying Service until called to active duty, August 1950 to June 1952. Vic enjoyed a long and successful career with United Air Lines from 1951 to 1981, and followed with Crown Airways until retiring December 1989 in Parkersburg, W.Va. Vic spent a large part of his retirement, 19 years, working with the Airport Shuttle Service in Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of American Legion Post 727, including the Funeral Honor Guard, and was a current member of Knights of Columbus Council 5544, with tenure totaling 48 years in Utah and Iowa. Vic volunteered at Mercy Medical Center 10 years. He enjoyed his family, golf, hunting and target shooting.
