Garry S. Matthiessen passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at the Hiawatha Care Center.
Garry was born to Garry and Louise (Young) Matthiessen on October 9, 1933, in Stone City, Iowa. He married Mary Cash on June 6, 1953, and together they raised two sons, Randy and Darin. Earlier this year they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.
Garry was employed for 41 years at the Iowa Manufacturing Company, prior to his retirement in 1994. Post retirement, they relocated to Bull Shoals Lake, Arkansas, and then spent every winter in Mesa, Arizona. They also enjoyed touring in their RV, eventually visiting all 49 states and even mixing in the 50th state of Hawaii on their 25th anniversary.
Garry had many interests and, never one to sit still, his passion was for camping, boating and all water sports, playing 20-plus years of Senior Softball in Arizona, and supporting his Iowa Hawkeyes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Marilyn Lent in 2022.
Survivors include his wife Mary, sons Randy (Joni) and Darin, three granddaughters Kacie, Shelbie, and Shanna, four great-grandchildren and sister Marie Waggoner.
Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6:30 pm Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Pastors Jim and Kris May will lead a time of prayer to end the evening at 6:30 pm. Burial will be held at Wilcox Cemetery on a later date. The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Hiawatha Care Center for the loving care they provided.
