Garry Gilbert Bleckwenn, 84, passed away on Sunday September 15, 2024.
Family and friends will gather Friday, September 20, 2024 from 4 PM to 6 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City.
Garry was born on July 16, 1940, in Emmetsburg, the son of Gilbert and Dorothy (Stigman) Bleckwenn. Garry received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and attended one year of law school. He served in the United States Air Force for four years.
Garry was Associate Director of Utilities at UI Physical Plant.
On June 25, 1961, Garry married Pamela Weisbrod in Fenton, Iowa. The two had known each other since first grade and began dating in high school. Garry’s interest in aviation continued after serving in the Air Force. He became a licensed pilot. He was quite handy and enjoyed time spent in his workshop. Seldom was there a need to call a repairman.
Garry is survived by his wife, Pamela and their daughters, Anne (David) Hahn and Sara (Dan) Schlapkohl; brothers, Mark Bleckwenn and Bert (Kathy) Bleckwenn; sister-in-law Nadine Weisbrod; grandchildren, Rachel (Dylan) Roe, Matt Hahn (Amber Bryan), Jacob and Emily Schlapkohl and great-grandson, Oliver Roe.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Self Help International of Waverly, Iowa.
