Garry G. Bell, 69, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Nov. 13, 2015. Family will greet friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at Murdoch-Linwood Legacy Center, Cedar Rapids.
Garry is survived by his wife, Patty; son, Todd (Alison) of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Taylor and Carter; stepson, Michael McNeil (Christine) of Indiana; three stepgrand-children, Ashley (Tim) Hall, Megan and Mike Jr.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Justin and Raelyn Hall; brother, Jerry (Ginny) of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Arlene (Dennis) Berry of Cedar Rapids; nephews, John Bell and Victor Jacobs; nieces, Judy Durbin, Jill Pearson, Julie Ciha and Carol Barbour; his extended family, Lynda (Mike) Burgess, Larry (Sandy) Barnett, Barbara Morton, Susie (Glenn) Schroer, Lisa (Mike) Barnett, Robert (Sarah) Barnett; and many nieces and nephews.
He enjoyed his Thursday outing buddies, Dick Duncalf, Bob Kern, Don Hosier and Jim Askam; his friends at the Westside Lounge; and the best neighbors in the world, Don and Kay Krotz, Wanda Ribble and Duane and Elaine Puhlman.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Robert and Norma Bell; brother, Larry Bell; grandparents, Chrystal and Craig Fritsinger and William and Elizabeth Bell; his special aunt, Marie Bell; and in-laws, Murray and Ellen Barnett and Mike Barnett.
He was born in his family home in Bonaparte, Iowa, to Robert and Norma Bell. He lived in Bonaparte until his family moved to Cedar Rapids. He attended McKinley Junior High School and graduated from George Washington High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1964 to 1967. Garry was united in marriage to Patricia K. Barnett on Nov. 18, 1967. After serving in the Navy, he went to work at Midland Forge. In 1972, he began his sheet metal apprenticeship with Local 263 and has been a dues paying member for 43 years.
A very special thank-you to the 5 Center nursing staff at St. Luke's Hospital and Dr. Litterer and UnityPoint Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and will be directed to the charities that Garry has chosen.
Garry has donated his body to the University of Iowa.
He will forever be remembered for his sense of humor, sarcastic nature and hundreds of sheet metal stars he has made for family and friends.
We will miss him dearly.
