Garrald W. (Bill/Red) Schroeder, 87, of Oelwein, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Feb. 15, 2018, at Mercy Living Plus, Oelwein. Graveside service: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, Sheridan Cemetery, eight miles south of Tama, with celebrant Diane Thovson officiating. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Bill was born Dec. 20, 1930, in Poweshiek County on a farm near Grinnell, Iowa, the son of William and Esther (Haynes) Schroeder. Bill spent four years in the U.S. Air Force after schooling in Tama, Iowa. He then returned to Tama and worked for O.K. Tire Shop and drove a school bus. In 1953, Bill worked in Cedar Rapids at Collins Radio (Rockwell Collins). On Oct. 19, 1957, he married Betty "Joyce" Van Orsdale at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
He lived in Cedar Rapids and Swisher for many years, and retired from Rockwell in 1988. Bill and Joyce moved to Oelwein in 1994. During retirement, Bill spent several winters in Englewood, Fla. He was active in various bowling and golf leagues. Bill loved to hunt, fish, bowl and work at home. He always was there to help others when in need.
Bill is survived by his wife, Joyce; several nieces and nephews; dear friends, Ron and Sue Glasgow of Minnesota; and the Bena family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Esther; and sisters, Jean Tibbedeaux and Ruth Kriz.
