Garlick, Audrey A.
Audrey A. Garlick, 88, of Maquoketa, died Friday morning, March 16, 2012, at her home in Maquoketa. Private graveside services and burial celebrating Audrey's life will be held at a later date at Oakland Cemetery, Manchester. A Natural Journey Farewell, with cremation, has taken place. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.
Audrey Ann Phelps was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Manchester, Iowa, to Ralph and Ila (Mertz) Phelps. She attended Manchester schools and later graduated from Iowa State University in 1945, with a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in home economics. After teaching in Illinois, she married Howard Garlick on Dec. 28, 1947, in Manchester, and they moved to a farm in the Ryan area.
Poor health forced Howard to retire from farming and he was hired by Dubuque Pack (later FDL Foods), moving to Maquoketa which became their home for over 50 years.
With an opening on the library staff, Audrey was hired as head of adult services, a position she loved and held for 25 years.
Audrey loved home, family, good books, good food, good music, and dogs, good or bad.
Audrey is survived by her husband, Howard Garlick of Maquoketa; a daughter, Kelly Garlick (Jeff) Hagen of Howards Grove, Wis.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Morehead (Dustin) Steger of Fond du Lac, Wis.; and a grandson, Sam Morehead of Sheboygan, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and numerous dogs, each one referred to by Kelly as her sister or brother.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Maquoketa Public Library, Jackson County Humane Society, or Hospice of Jackson County.
Online condolences may be left at www.CarsonAndSon.com.
