Garien, Helen
Helen Garien, 94, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at Higley Mansion, Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Al Polito will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.
Surviving are two sons, Robert L. (Jan) of Marion and Alan R. of Rockford, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Suzanne Garien of Clinton; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert F. on May 16, 1982; a son, Marlin in 2010; two great-grandchildren; her sister, Martha Chapman; and a brother, James Robertson.
Helen Robertson was born March 6, 1918, at Wyoming, Iowa, the daughter of John and Marie Bader Robertson. Helen attended rural schools in Jones County and the Monticello Community Schools. She worked cleaning houses until she was married. Helen married Robert F. Garden on June 26, 1942, in Dubuque. The couple lived for a brief time in Onslow and then moved to Monticello.
Helen had been a member of First Presbyterian Church since she was 10 years old. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Rebecca Circle. She also belonged to the Lovell Homemakers Club.
