Garbers, Geraldine 'Gerry'
Geraldine “Gerry” Garbers, 90, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, from injuries suffered in an auto accident. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 3, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Van Horne, with the Rev. David Lingard officiating. Interment will be held at the Keystone Cemetery. Public visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Central Lutheran School and the American Cancer Society. Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone is in charge of arrangements.
“Gerry” was born April 20, 1921, at Van Horne, to Franklin Edward and Matilda Sophia (Kerkman) Young and graduated from the Van Horne High School in 1938. In 1957, she became a licensed beautician and practiced her profession for many years in Van Horne.
A member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Van Horne, she was a member of L.W.M.L., belonged to Sewing Club and the Red Hats. Gerry was an avid Hawkeye Fan and enjoyed bowling, reading, music and dancing. She was family oriented, a loving wife and mother and adored her family.
On June 7, 1939, she was united in marriage to Henry “Heinie” Garbers at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Van Horne. The couple would have celebrated their 73rd anniversary this month.
Gerry is survived by her husband, Henry “Heinie” Garbers of Van Horne; her daughters, Joan Garbers of Van Horne, and Jean (Gene) Kubu of Buffalo, Minn.; her grandchildren, Kristin Gandia, Talion Kubu, Kara Done, Kallin Mead and Kerry Garbers; 11 great grandchildren; and her sister, Della McConnaughey of Keystone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Gregory Kubu; her sister, Florence Grovert; and her brother, Wesley Young.
