Galen L. Behrends, 66, of Marshalltown, passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church or the Community Y of Marshalltown. Galen was born Sept. 21, 1950, to Henry and Irene (Hasler) Behrends, in Monticello, Iowa. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1968. Galen received his undergrad from Upper Iowa University in 1972 and his MBA from the University of Northern Iowa in 1982. Galen was united in marriage to Barbara Hunt on Sept. 5, 1970, in Monticello. In his early years, Galen was employed with Prestolite Battery in Manchester, Dun & Bradstreet Inc. in Des Moines and taught accounting at Buena Vista College in Marshalltown. Most recently, Galen was employed with Emerson Process Management as a finance manager. Galen was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council as treasurer. He volunteered with police reserves, Marshalltown school board, YMCA and Partners With Youth. Galen also coached many of his kids' sports teams. He was currently serving as a volunteer with Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP). Galen enjoyed sports, reading, Sudoku puzzles, playing guitar and spending time with his grandkids.
Galen will be missed by his wife, Barb; two daughters, Lisa Behrends of Grinnell and Tina (BJ) Lansing of Ankeny; a son, Adam (Julie) Behrends of Urbandale; five grandchildren, Taylor, Cole and Breanna Lansing and Brooklyn and Makayla Behrends; his mother, Irene Behrends of Marion; two sisters, Sharon Mettler of Marion and Janet Behrens of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Steven (Diane) Behrends of Mount Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Behrends.
