Gale Lee Thirtyacre, 89, of North Liberty, died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Mercy Iowa City. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will
be one hour before the service. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, North Liberty, with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the North Liberty American Legion Post 1976.
Gale was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Wapello, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Julia (Ament) Thirtyacre. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the South Pacific. On Aug. 21, 1946, Gale married Creta Carter in Hampton, Iowa. Gale moved to the North Liberty area in 1954. He was a maintenance worker for the DOT for 27 years, retiring in 1988. Gale was a farmer in the North Liberty area for 20 years.
He was a member of North Liberty First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 1976. Gale bred and raised quarter horses and enjoyed getting young people interested in horse-related activities. He loved to raccoon hunt with his mule, "Dan," and play cards with his friends.
Gale is survived by his loving wife, Creta; their three sons, Darwin (Sharon) Thirtyacre of Iowa City, Wendell Thirtyacre of Washington and Marvin Thirtyacre of North Liberty; five grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.
Gale was preceded in death by one son, G. Dwayne Thirtyacre; his parents; and nine siblings, Elmer, John, Clarence, Chester, Dale, Carl, Ida Adams, Lela Noble and Ola Johnson.
