Gale Edwin Morey passed away peacefully Sunday, June 26, 2016, at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Neb. He was born May 11, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Gale graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1953, where he participated in football, baseball and was sports editor of the school newspaper. In 1959, he graduated from Cornell College in Mount Vernon. At Cornell, he was a member of Beta Omicron Fraternity, "The Owls." Because of his beloved Beta Omicron, Gale had an extensive collection of owls. Upon graduation, he took a job with The Omaha World Herald. He also worked for Omaha University, Omaha Knights Hockey, Record Printing Company, Yaffe Printing Company, Action Printing Company and Omaha Steaks.
Gale volunteered with the Omaha Junior Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Omaha March of Dimes, Boy Scouts of America, YMCA and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. His awards include Outstanding Young Printing Executive, Outstanding Printer of the Midlands and Volunteer of the Year for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Gale was a passionate golfer. The highlight of his lifelong love of the game was a hole-in-one at the Field Club of Omaha on the 16th hole, a 147-yard par three. He accomplished this with his lucky seven iron. He was also passionate about his Nebraska Cornhuskers, Creighton Bluejay Basketball and the Kansas City Royals.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joanne Morey; six children, Kathy Fehrman (Bill), Patty Haver (Jim), Lynn Schluns (Scott), David Morey (Ann), Mike Morey (Deb) and Janelle O'Neill (Mike); grandchildren, Brandy Downing, Stephanie Ferris, Zach Haver, Blake Marcum, Abby Haver, Ben Fehrman, Scott Fehrman, Jake Schluns, Mitch Morey, Lindsey O'Neill and Chloe O'Neill; and great-grandchildren include Finley Marcum, Jackson Downing, Brooklyn Downing and Brayden Ferris.
Gale was preceded in death by his mother, Edna (Morey) Lindsey; father, Raymond Morey; and sister, Anita Frazee.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, with a wake service at 7 p.m. at the John A. Gentleman 72nd Strett Chapel in Omaha. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Omaha. Burial of ashes Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Omaha.
