Gaffey, Marian
Marian Gaffey, 87, formerly of 529 E. Church St., Iowa City, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Iowa City Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Rev. Thom Hennen officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Lensing Funeral Service, Iowa City, where a parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church or The Regina Foundation.
Marian was born Oct. 27, 1922, in Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Brack) Halsch. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Iowa City. Marian married Seth Mann Jr. in July 1945. Mr. Mann died in November 1946. In June 1951, Marian married Robert Gaffey at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and an attentive spouse. Marian enjoyed embroidering, baking, tending to her flower garden, canning and spoiling her grandchildren. The family has fond memories of many family vacations.
She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and also a member of Altar & Rosary Society.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; her children, Susan Wolf of Davenport, Michael (Donna) Gaffey of Iowa City, JoAnn Gaffey of Iowa City, Jayne (Paul) of Coralville, Martin (Mary) Gaffey of Iowa City, Timothy (Mary Ann) Gaffey of Iowa City, and James (Sally) Gaffey of Iowa City; a sister, Catherine Mattes of Washington; sister-in-law, Helen Halsch of Cosgrove; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Marian was also preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Seth Mann Jr.; a sister, Iona Mann; a brother, Joseph Halsch; and a son-in-law, Donald Wolf.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Iowa City Health Care & Rehabilitation for their care and support given to Marian over the past four years.
