GAE MARLENE CASTEK
Shueyville
Gae Marlene Castek, 82,
of Shueyville, died Thursday, July 27, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics surrounded by her family. Celebration of life services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at Shueyville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Anderson Cemetery, near Swisher. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW.
Gae was born Sept. 23, 1934, in Lowden, the daughter of Carl and Marie (Hoffner) Luettjohann. She graduated from Shueyville High School in 1952, where she enjoyed playing on the basketball team with her classmates. After graduating, she began working at Merchants National Bank and later at Swisher Trust & Savings Bank for 35 years before retiring. Gae was united in marriage to John Castek on June 25, 1954, at Shueyville United Methodist Church. In her early years, she enjoyed gardening, canning and family camping and fishing trips to Elkader. As a couple, she and John enjoyed dancing and taking trips to Branson. Throughout her life she enjoyed the simpler things. Family time was very important to her, and she always thought of others before herself. She was truly the one everyone could count on for details, including birthdays and anniversaries. She was a member of the Swisher American Legion Auxiliary, Shueyville United Methodist Church and WFLA Lodge 400.
Gae is survived by her husband of more than 63 years, John; her children, Nancy (Randy) Coughlin and Jane Dunkel, both of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Ryan Dunkel, Dustin Dunkel, Joel Coughlin, Andrea (Kiley) Kraayenbrink and Justin (Hayley) Coughlin; one great-granddaughter, Mila Kraayenbrink; and her sister, June Cach.
Gae was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Neil (Margaret) Luettjohann and Robert Luettjohann; and a brother-in-law, John Cach.
She was cherished by her family and will be deeply missed.
