Fulton, Jack Merrick
Jack Merrick Fulton, 81, of Richmond, Va., passed from this life peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, May 13, 2013, at his home in the Fan district of Richmond.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Lee Fulton of Richmond; his brother, Chuck Fulton, and his parents, Alice and John Fulton, of Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his son, Otis Fulton and his wife, Chris Gennings Fulton; his grandchildren, Jack and Drew Fulton, all of Richmond; his brother, Bob Fulton, of Cedar Rapids; and his sister, Sue Ann Sickles of Des Moines.
Jack held a BA from Coe College, where he was inducted into its Sports Hall of Fame for baseball and basketball and a law degree from the University of Iowa. He served three terms as county attorney in Linn County Iowa was the commissioner of Public Safety for the state of Iowa, and the director of Public Safety for the City of Richmond. He later went on to practice law and founded the Richmond Association of Retired Employees (RARE) through which he advocated and litigated issues on the behalf of City of Richmond retirees. Finally, he spent years serving as a Guardian Ad Litem for children with the Richmond Juvenile Court.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
Because he was a great dog lover, in lieu of flowers, well wishers are asked to make a donation in Jack's name to the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, VA 23220; (804) 643-6785.
