Marshall was born Oct. 18, 1932, in Cedar Rapids. His parents were Marshall B. and Fern Freeman. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1951. This is where he met his high school sweetheart, Helen.
Marshall attended Iowa State University before entering the Army in 1953. Marshall and Helen were married Jan. 19, 1954, and spent two months together at Fort Knox before he was sent to Korea for 18 months. He was discharged in September 1955.
In January 1956, they moved to Nevada, Iowa and lived there until he received his B.S. in agronomy from Iowa State University in 1959.
