Fred G. Thompson II, 81, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, January 4, 2025. A visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the funeral home. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Cedar Rapids.
Fred was born on October 4, 1943, in Chariton, Iowa, to Fred and Mary (Stevenson) Thompson. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1965. On April 22, 1989, Fred married Patricia Eileen Balfe in Cedar Rapids. He built a dedicated career, working at Link-Belt Speeder, Rockwell Goss, and Worley Warehousing before retiring in 2008. Fred served as Vice President of the Machinists Union and was a member of Local Lodge 831.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Thompson of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Jennifer (John) Takes of Urbana, Iowa, and Betsy (Jeff) Phelps of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Kayla (Kamden), Emily (Gabe), Courtney (Reyanna), Bailey (Josh), Nick (Danica), and Skyler (Caelynn); two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Addison; and brother-in-law, Mike Balfe.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred G. Thompson; and mother, Mary H. Moon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.
