Franey, Naomi
Naomi Franey, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 89 years. Celebration of Life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Williamsburg. Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Joe of Williamsburg; two daughters, Linda (Bob) Driscoll of Williamsburg and Patti (Steve) Smith of Johnston, Iowa; two sons, Mike (Gaye) Dougherty of Okoboji and Van Dougherty of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Register; and two brothers, Richard Hatchell and Tom Hatchell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Lannie, Alma and Dina; and three brothers, Bill, Jimmy and Herb.
Naomi was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Columbia, S.C., the daughter of Ollan and Addie (Boney) Hatchell. She graduated from Blythewood High School in South Carolina. She married Dr. Keith Dougherty and of that union they had three children: Linda, Mike and Van. They were later divorced. On April 13, 1974, she married Joseph E. Franey Jr. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was a sales associate at Armstrong's Department Store for 17 years, retiring in 1987. They lived in Cedar Rapids until moving to Highland Ridge Retirement Community in August 2008.
Naomi was a former member of the Eastern Star and Elk Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, golfing, playing bridge, bowling and attending Hawkeye football games.
