Franey, MD
William E. Franey, MD, 89, died December 7, 2010 in Saddleback Hospital, Laguna Hills, Calif. He was born in Marengo, Iowa on October 23, 1921. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1939, Coe College in 1943, and the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1946. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army medical corps in the Philippines. Dr. Franey practiced medicine in Cedar Rapids for 50 years from 1949 to 1999. During this time, in addition to numerous professional activities, he was the team physician for Washington High School. He was joined in matrimony to Ruthanna Franey in 1958. He served many years on the board of directors of the American Horse Show Association and the United States Pony Clubs.
Dr. Franey is survived by his wife, Ruthanna, and her children, William, Becky, and John Ross; niece, Cinda Gaffigan; nephew, Greg Williams; and grandson, Aaron Franey. He was preceded in death by his two sons, William and Robert Franey, and his sister, Alicia Franey Doherty.
At a later date, a memorial service and inurnment will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos, Calif. Memorials in his name may be given to the University of Iowa College of Medicine or Camp Courageous of Iowa.
