Franey Jr., Joseph E.
Joseph E. Franey Jr. died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 90 years. He can now enjoy the grand and wonderful view on his porch in Heaven.
Joe was born Sept. 24, 1922, the son of Joseph Sr. and Mildred (Halvorson) Franey. He graduated from Marengo High School, St. Ambrose University and Ohio State University. Joe was united in marriage to Margaret Harvey in 1944, and they were blessed with a daughter, Patti. Margaret died in 1972. Joe then found and married his love of 38 years, Naomi Hatchell Dougherty, on April 13, 1974, in Cedar Rapids. With this union he gained another daughter, Linda, and two sons, Mike and Van.
He worked as an industrial engineer for Rockwell Collins and retired from Amana Refrigeration. Naomi and Joe loved spending time with family and their friends at the Elks Lodge in Cedar Rapids. He loved being around young people and the great-grandchildren were a special light in his life.
Joe served in World War II and was a member of the Elks Lodge and VFW.
He is survived by two daughters, Patti (Steve) Smith of Johnston and Linda (Bob) Driscoll of Williamsburg; two sons, Mike (Gaye) Dougherty of Okoboji and Van Dougherty of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret in 1972; wife, Naomi in 2011; and a brother, James Franey.
Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time.
A memorial fund has been established for the Elks Lodge in Cedar Rapids.
