Francis A. Luzum, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, from complications of heart failure. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, where a visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Inurnment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Lu Anne Moody (Robert) of Cedar Rapids and Deb Schell (Kevin) of Ankeny; and three sons, Francis Jr. (fiancee, Cathy) of Cedar Rapids, Ronald Luzum (Cathy) of Cedar Rapids and Chad Luzum (Rebecca) of Cedar Rapids. Francis is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Florence Hackman of Decorah, Vic Luzum of Decorah, Joan (George) McCusker of Overland Park, Kan., Monica (Tony) Steinlage of Decorah, Bill (Jan) Luzum of Benson, Minn., and James (Arlene) Luzum of Rosemont, Minn.; and three sisters-in-law, JoAnn Luzum, Calmar, Geraldine Hays of Cedar Rapids and Irma Luzum of St. Lucas.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kara L. Sizemore; his parents, William and Leona (Schissel) Luzum; father and mother-in-law, Bryon R. Sizemore and Wilma F. Silvernail Sizemore; four brothers, Clarence, Paul, Arnold and Leo (Darlene) Luzum; two sisters, Loretta Collins and Rita Humpal; two sisters-in-law, Esther Luzum and Dorothy Luzum of Denver, Colo.; three brothers-in-law, Herman Steinlage, Rudy Humpal and Othmar Hackman; and one grandchild, Blaine Luzum.
Francis Arthur Luzum was born Aug. 31, 1932, on his parents' family farm west of Calmar, Iowa. Francis was baptized, received First Holy Communion and confirmed at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. He married Kara L. Sizemore on Dec. 29, 1956, at St Joseph Catholic Church in Sacramento, Calif. He enlisted in the Air Force and service from 1954 to 1958 where he was an airborne radio operator, stationed at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento. He earned the Good Conduct Metal.
After his service, he farmed for 10 years where he carried a rural route in Calmar. In 1968, he and his family moved to Cedar Rapids where he continued his postal service employment and then retired in 1991. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, hunting, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs, taking his chances on the slot machines and playing baseball in which he lettered in high school.
