FRANCES GREENLEY
Sigourney
Frances Greenley of Sigourney passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Keokuk County Health Center, where she had been lovingly cared for by the local health care team. She spent the day before her death celebrating her 95th birthday as a steady stream of family and friends stopped by to celebrate her birthday and say good-bye to a dear friend.
Frances Veronica Conrad was born April 30, 1919, in rural Keota, the oldest of four daughters of L.A. and Leona (Kiefer) Conrad. She attended Doggett country school and graduated from Sigourney High School and later graduated from the Des Moines Business School. She worked at the Keokuk County Treasurer's Office and spent lunch hours working at Heaton's Café on the Square. While working at the Treasurer's Office she met a traveling salesman who told her that her eyes would get her into trouble. So, on June 26, 1943, Frances married the love of her life, Willis Hudson Greenley, in Hannibal, Mo., as he headed off to serve in World War II. Together Frances and Willis raised three children, Kathy, Bill and Terry, while starting a family business, Greenleys Corp., where she served as president in her later years.
Frances was a loyal member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, where she served on the Altar and Rosary Society. She loved to play bingo and enjoyed an occasional outing to a nearby casino for a day of entertainment.
Frances is survived by her children, Kathy Beery and husband Jerry DeWitt of Holly Springs, N.C., James Willis "Bill" Greenley and wife Donna of Boone and Terence Patrick "Terry" Greenley and wife Fran Fleck of Sigourney and West Des Moines. She also is survived by grandchildren, Scot (Pam) and Matt (Renica) Beery, Angie and Todd (Betty) Nash and Cory and Matt (Krista) DeWitt; and great- grandchildren, Hudson and Katerra Beery, Derek and Jeremy Nash and Hayden, McKenzie, Charlotte, Owen and Aubrielle Dewitt. She also is survived by sisters, Helen Gann of Roseville, Calif., Isabelle Flander of Washington and Bibiana (Dan) Chadwick of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Leona French of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Willis in 1995; and grandson, Scott Nash in 2010.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, with the Rev. Ray McHenry and the Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Private burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Sigourney. The family will greet visitors at a visitation on Sunday, May 4, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney, with a wake service at 4 p.m.
The family expresses great appreciation to the staff at Keokuk County Health Center and Hospice of Keokuk County for their care of Frances.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Activity Fund at Keokuk County Health Center or to Hospice of Keokuk County.
Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Frances and her family.
