Fortner, Boyd Lee
Boyd Lee Fortner, 73, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, by the Rev. Bill Harnish. Family will greet friends from noon until service time at the funeral home on Wednesday. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Charlene Fortner; his children, Carol (Ron) Whitney of Hiawatha and Ken (Belinda) Fortner of Joplin, Mo.; stepdaughter, Tina Webster of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and one on the way; sister, Roxie Barron of Marion; brother, George (Jo) Fortner of Greenville, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Harry Phellps of Lisbon; two sisters-in-law, Lola Fortner of Marion and Darlene (Roger) Franck of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Phellps; and four brothers, Harlan, Tom, Alva and Jack Fortner.
Boyd was born Feb. 28, 1937, the son of Con and Bonnie Fortner, in Greenville, Tenn. He worked on the family farm until he moved to Iowa, where he worked at the Witwer Plant, Marion Cashway and Weather Shield in Cedar Rapids, retiring in the 1970s. Boyd also delivered the Cedar Rapids Gazette for many years. On Aug. 16, 1982, he married Charlene Webster. A Coca Cola bottle collector, Boyd enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
