Floyd Sander, 96, of Mount Vernon, passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Hallmark Care Center. Celebration of Life: 2 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon, by Pastor Karen Nelson.Visitation: one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Harriett; children, Barbara (David) Sander Vig and David (Novena) Sander; grandchildren, Darin (Charlene) and Dana (Emily) Vig and David (Joan) and Marriett Sander; eight great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, and friends.
Floyd Edward Sander was born May 20, 1920, to August and Lillian (Thompson) Sander, in Clinton, Iowa. He attended Clinton High School, graduating in 1940. He served the Army as a paratrooper earning a Purple Heart until his discharge in 1945. Floyd married Harriett Moffitt on Sept. 8, 1946, in Clinton; they later moved to the Linn County area.
He belonged to the local American Legion and VFW. Floyd enjoyed golf, becoming Hillcrest Club champion in 1964, and having putting contests with his grandsons. Floyd always would have a buckeye in his pocket for good luck, and loved traveling; he even became an honorary member of the Hell's Angels in the early 1970s. He always was helping wherever and whenever he was needed, especially with horticulture and agricultural tasks.
He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.
