Floyd "Jeff" Merritt, 58, of Mount Vernon, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids after a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion by Father David O'Connor. Scripture service: 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion and one hour before the service Saturday at the church. Burial: 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Jeff was born in Anamosa on March 27, 1956, to Lewis (Jack) and Joyce (Lacock) Merritt. He attended St. Pat's Grade School in Anamosa and graduated from Anamosa High School in 1975. Jeff was a mechanic by trade. After high school, he worked for his dad and various employers until he went to work for Mercy Medical Center as an EMT and ambulance and mobile mammography mechanic for nearly 30 years. Most recently he worked as a bus driver and mechanic for the Mount Vernon School District. On Oct. 27, 1990, he married Kyleen Trout in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Kyleen; his son, Alex; daughter, Katy; two brothers; and three sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents and his mother-in-law.
Jeff was an active bowler, Boy Scout leader for Troop 68 at St. Joseph's in Marion, was a pit crew member for Zach Ralston Racing, enjoyed stock car races, loved to fish in Canada, was an avid chef and many will remember him as Santa Claus.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Troop 68 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1790 14th St., Marion, IA 52302; or the charity of your choice in Jeff's name or to the family.
