Florence Hodges, 89, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital. Homegoing services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with the
Rev. Damian Epps presiding. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW.
Florence was born May 20, 1925, in Ridgley, Tenn., the daughter of Tom and Virgie (Johnson) Ballentine. She married the late Marshall C. Nickelson in Milwaukee, Wis., in December 1943. Florence was united in marriage to Willie B. Hodges Sr. on June 19, 1965, in Cedar Rapids, and remained married until his passing on July 4, 1995.
She was a faithful member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, were she was officer over numerous auxiliaries.
Florence is survived by her children, Marshall Nickelson Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Charlotte (Charles) Julion of Waterloo, Ronald (Cathy) Nickelson of Memphis, Tenn., Charles (Carolyn) Hodges, Willie Hodges II, Larken Hodges and Michael (ToShanna) Hodges, all of Cedar Rapids, and Shirley Diane (Clyde) Woods and Jenny Mae Echols, both of Memphis, Tenn.; as well as a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Cora Crittendon and Evelyn Harrison; a son, Willie B. Hodges Jr.; and two daughters, Linda Hodges and one in infancy, Virginia Lee Nickelson.
A memorial fund has been established in her name at Brosh Chapel, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.
