Henry was born July 13, 1929, in Litchfield, Ill., the son of John and Mary Bohlen Flitz. Henry was a graduate of Blackburn College and also received a master's degree in agriculture from the University of Illinois. He served his country as a captain in the United States Air Force. Henry was employed for many years as a district director with the Farmers Home Administration.
On July 2, 1949, Henry and Elynor Stapp, the love of his life, eloped and were married in Petosi, Mo. Henry “Red” and Elynor “Ely” lived in Princeton, Ill., for many years, later moved to Texas and subsequently made Coralville their summer home.
Henry grew up on a farm and continued to farm throughout his life. He and Ely greatly enjoyed their times in Texas, especially line dancing to country music with good friends.
He will be remembered as one who was always willing to lend a very capable and helping hand, and for taking such good care of Ely. He enjoyed the times he spent with his grandchildren.
Henry is survived by his three children, Susan (William) Phelan of Magnolia, Texas, LouAnn (Jeff) Landes of Billings, Mo., and James Flitz (Suzanne Summerwill) of Coralville; six grandchildren, Steven (Danielle) Landes, David Landes, Sean Phelan, Katy (Eric) McClanahan, Graham Flitz and Evan Flitz; one great-grandson, Keegan McClanahan; and his sisters, Erma Hardt of Litchfield, Ill., and Irene Fenton of Kirkwood, Mo.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Elynor, who died in 2011.
