Flanagan, James A.
James A. Flanagan died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Friends and relatives may call at the chapel after 1:30 p.m. today. Burial: Holy Family Cemetery in Anamosa.
James A. Flanagan, son of John T. Flanagan and Clara (Renner) Flanagan, was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Alexandria, Minn. He married Jean Ann Foley on Sept. 5, 1942, and they enjoyed 55 years together until her death in 1997. James began his military career by induction into the Army in April 1941. Following a tour of duty in Africa and Italy during World War II, he joined the Iowa National Guard, retiring as a brigadier general in 1971. After World War II James became manager of the Iowa Falls division of the Iowa Electric Utility Co. After service in Germany during the Korean War, James went back to Iowa Electric as a manager in Boone. He continued his career with the company until his retirement in 1983 as general commercial manager in Cedar Rapids.
James was active in Republican Party politics. He served as a board member and as president of the Lincoln Club. He was also a “Kitchen Cabinet” member of several state and national legislators.
Survivors include six children, Dr. Kirby Flanagan and wife Virginia of Medina, Ohio, Maureen Andresen and husband Tim of Galva, Iowa, Brian Flanagan of Iowa City, Kerry Flanagan of Seattle, Wash., Erin Johanns of Cedar Rapids and Kathleen Flanagan of Pendleton, Ore. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren, Dr. Darcie Carpenter, Bridget Jones, Dr. Meg Flanagan, Sean Flanagan, Douglas Andresen, SFC Craig Andresen, Kelly Andresen, Marc Andresen, Daniel, Jennifer and Allison Johanns, Andrea Flanagan and Alena Swearingen; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Robert J. Flanagan; and his sister, Patricia A. Carleton.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Ann; his son, Kevin; his parents; and two brothers, William F. Flanagan and John T. Flanagan Jr.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, Hallmar, or Mercy Home Health.
