Fishel, Eugene H.
Eugene H. Fishel, 89, of the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha, formerly of Manchester, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital after a short illness. Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, where there will be military rites. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Survivors include three sons, Mike (Megan) of Portland, Ore., Steven (Linda) of Cedar Rapids and Jeffrey (Wanda) of Cedar Falls; and a daughter, Barb (Dave Offerman) O'Connell of Manchester. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; and two great-grandchildren, Darian and Michael.
Gene was born Aug. 20, 1921, in Manchester, the son of Robert and Hazel (Reisner) Fishel, and graduated from high school there in 1939. He attended Wartburg College, the University of Iowa and later graduated from Illinois College of Podiatry and Foot Surgery in Chicago in 1951.
He married Dorothy E. Kackley on June 23, 1949, in Chicago. She died in 2009. The family moved back to Manchester and Gene established his practice until his semiretirement in 1993. Gene and his wife Dorothy then moved to Cedar Rapids, where Gene continued practicing podiatry until 1996 after 45 years of service.
Gene was proud to have served in the military and was a member of the VFW. He was cited for bravery in World War II for transporting troops to Sicily.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by his beloved family and many friends.
Memorial donations may be given to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Gene's name.
