Francis J. “Frank” Fischer
Francis J. “Frank” Fischer, 83, of Cedar Rapids, passed away April 18, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 22, with a vigil starting at 2 p.m. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 23, at All Saints Catholic Church.
Frank was born Nov. 6, 1928, in Owensboro, Ky., to Henry and Julia Rose Fischer. Frank lived in Cedar Rapids for the last 61 years. Frank served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1946 to 1951. Soon after his discharge he moved to Cedar Rapids, where he married Kay Brendes in 1957 and worked for the Department of Defense Logistic Agency until his retirement in 1984. Frank and Kay were fortunate to be able to spend their winters in Mesa, Ariz., enjoying friends.
Frank was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, where he served as an usher, and Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator and dedicated numerous volunteer hours to many worthy causes. Frank enjoyed cards, entertaining friends and was always happy to help others.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Kay; two children, Craig (Janice) Fischer and Denise (Steve) Stockman; four grandchildren, Chelsea (Beck) Via, Nathan (Jalynn) Rohlf, Michael Fischer and Kevin Fischer; one brother, Bernard Fischer; and one sister, Jean Wilhem.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
The family would like to thank everyone at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for the kindness and care they gave him and his family in the final days of his life.
