Fiala, Arlene Agnes Quaid
Arlene Agnes Quaid Fiala, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, July 29, 2011, peacefully at her daughter's home. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m., and again Tuesday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Arlene is survived by 11 children, Sister Annette Fiala, Wayne (Sue) Fiala, Mary (Gary) Craig, Bill (Kathy) Fiala, Marie (Tom) Jones, Katherine (Scott) Frerick, all of Cedar Rapids, Arlita (Mark) Hopkins of Wallace, N.C., Ann (Boyd) Beal of Grovetown, Ga., Joe Fiala of Denver, Colo., John (Theresa) Fiala of Atkins and Ed (Marci) Fiala of Marion; 31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wencil; a son, Steve; three brothers, Ray, Donald and Wayne; and sister, Anita.
Arlene was born March 4, 1922, in Ryan, the daughter of J.C. and Anna (Meighan) Quaid. She graduated from St. Patrick Catholic High School in 1940. She married Wencil Fiala on Feb. 10, 1942, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Arlene was an avid reader and in her later years became an avid radio listener. She enjoyed Irish music and jazz. As a poetry and art enthusiast, she was an active supporter of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and encouraged many budding artists. She enjoyed all her family, especially the company of her grandchildren.
