Richard E. Ferris, 83, went home to be with the Lord and his family and friends on April 16, 2012.
Richard was born Sept. 26, 1928, in Albia, Iowa, to John J. and Katherine (Chiavario) Ferris, the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Albia High School and attended Carthage College in Illinois, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He joined the Navy in August 1946 and was honorably discharged in October 1949. Richard married Marjorie Vaughan on Nov. 26, 1952, in Indianola, Iowa and then went to work at Rockwell-Collins as a mechanical engineer from 1955 to 1989.
Richard had been a certified scuba diver and earned his private pilot's license. After retirement, Richard played golf and enjoyed getting together with his sub-vet buddies. He and Marge traveled and enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Richard was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, Friendship Force International and was a very proud member of the Association Submarine Vets of World War II and U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc.
Richard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie V. Ferris; daughters, Ruth Ferris Armstrong (Steve) of Cedar Rapids and Katherine Feldman of Cedar Rapids; brother, Wayne Ferris of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Laura Ann Feldman of Iowa City and Kimberly Ellen Feldman of Madison, Wis.; and foreign exchange daughter, Christel Kirchner (Germany).

The family would like to thank Pastor Mike Morgan, Vicky Standley, Mercy Hospice, special nurse, Krissy, and the staff at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for the excellent care provided to Richard.
