Fern L. Davis, 86, passed away Feb. 13, 2023, in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Fern was born Feb. 17, 1936, in Bristow, Iowa, the daughter of Fay Goodsell and Hazel (Weichers) Goodsell. Fern married Richard Witwer on Feb. 26, 1956. Their marriage was blessed with three sons. They divorced in 1969. Richard passed away in 1981. In 1969, Fern married Wayne Davis and they had a daughter, Melissa. Wayne and Fern divorced in 1979. Fern then met life partner Donald Wilson of West Liberty. They were together until his passing. Donald’s two girls, Beth Ann and Debbie were like daughters to Fern and sisters to Melissa and Michael.
Fern loved her family tremendously. She loved to bake and believed that there was never enough pie. She was an avid Hawkeyes supporter, both football and basketball. Fern loved golf when she was younger. Fern was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church in her younger years. She was a Realtor for Century 21, Florist with Eicher Florist and Pleasant Valley, business owner, operating Melrose Market by the Kinnick stadium. In retirement Fern was a valuable Volunteer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic. Her passing leaves an emptiness, but her legacy continues on through all who loved her.
She is survived by her children, Corey Davis, Joel Witwer, Michael (Dawn) Davis and Melissa Hoffman; grandchildren, Samantha (Brandon), Parker (Tessa) Davis-Walz, Madison Hoffman, Logan (Hannah) Hoffman, Carter Hoffman and Mason Hoffman; brother, Russell (Linda) Goodsell; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Minor. Sadly, Fern is preceded in death by her sister, Linda Minor; and her parents, Fay and Hazel.
Simple cremation services has occurred in accordance with her wishes. Memorial services will be held at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service (2720 Muscatine Avenue, Iowa City) on Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m., with a luncheon and fellowship to follow. Family private committal ceremony will be held at North Prairie Cemetery in West Liberty.
Please continue to keep Fern’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
