Fern Eash was born Feb. 24, 1929, in rural Parnell, Iowa, the daughter of Urie and Norma (Kinsinger) Swart-zendruber. She graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1948. On Sept. 9, 1951, she was united in marriage to Donald Eash at the West Union Mennonite Church. They lived and farmed in rural Parnell for 28 years before moving in to Wellman in 1980. Fern also worked as a medication aide at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona for 20 years. She was a lifelong member of the West Union Mennonite Church, where she taught nursery Sunday school for many years and was active with WMSC and many other church activities. She enjoyed being a homemaker, gardening, cooking and sewing. She had an artistic and musical talent and greeted everyone with an affectionate warm smile. Fern died Saturday, Dec.
6, 2014, at Parkview of Wellman at the age of 85 years.
Fern is survived by three children, Michael (Marie) Eash of California, Merridy (Allen) Leichty of Wellman and Martin Eash of North Liberty; five grandchildren, Dominique Eash, Dawn Eash and Lauren Eash, all of California, William (Kate) Leichty of Sacramento, Calif., and Christina Leichty of Iowa City;
and a great-granddaughter, Jo Leichty.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don in 2010; two sisters, Audrey Hochstetler and Mary Lois Swart-zendruber; and a brother, Dale Swartzendruber.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell with Pastor Corey Miller and Pastor Martha Yoder officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman.
A memorial fund has been established for West Union Mennonite Church (WMSC kitchen fund) and Iowa Mennonite School.
