Farrington, Engel Mary
Engel Mary Farrington, 92, retired Rockwell Collins employee, died April 3, 2012, at Silvercrest of Anamosa. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Anamosa. Pastor Katie Lowe Lancaster will officiate at the service. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery, rural Monticello.
Surviving are a son, Eugene (Sharon) of Anamosa, and their children, Gena (Al Schul) and Gennifer; a daughter, Elaine (Victor) Siegel of Tega Cay, S.C., and their children, Angela and Robbie; several nieces and nephews; and a very good friend, Carl Sieveka.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl, who worked for the city of Anamosa for 20 years; and three brothers, Emil, Henry and Chris Scheer.
Engel was born July 31, 1919, near Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of August and Gasena (Landherr) Scheer. She graduated from Anamosa High School in 1939. On Sept. 8, 1943, she married Carl Farrington. Together they farmed for several years. After graduating from high school, she worked at Reliance Manufacturing Co. for 4 1/2 years. Later, she worked at the Anamosa newspaper for six months, Rockwell Collins for 18 years, and did a little baby sitting.
Engel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she helped with the newsletter, and went to church nearly every Sunday; Martha Circle, the VFW auxiliary, the hospital auxiliary and the Anamosa Garden Club.
Engel was a saving woman: if she didn't need it, she didn't buy it. She really loved her children and her grandchildren and tried to do all the things she could for them. She took walks every day and belonged to an exercise class. She loved dancing and went nearly every week, sometimes more than once. She didn't mind picking someone up if they needed a ride. She drove her car in almost any kind of weather, and enjoyed going for a drive in the Wapsipinicon State Park which they did several times a week. She enjoyed making homemade valentines, Easter cards and birthday cards for her grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Engel's name.
