Faith A. Strackbein, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Lowden, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Zion United Church of Christ in Lowden with visitation at 2 p.m. and service starting at 3 p.m. The Rev. Stephen Stepp will be officiating.
Faith Aletha Hoyer was born in Arlington, Iowa, on July 25, 1928, to Gustav and Elnora Asmus Hoyer, the ninth of 10 children. She moved with her family to Oxford Junction at age 8, where she later graduated from high school. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI), received a teaching certificate and taught for two years in rural Cedar County schools. On June 14, 1947, she married Erwin Strackbein of Lowden at Zion United Church of Christ. During their 64 years together, Faith and Erwin, who operated Strackbeins Inc., a John Deere dealership, raised a family and were active in the Lowden community.
Faith was a past member of Zion's choir and Evening Circle, the American Legion Auxiliary, the 3/30 Country Club and served as a longtime board member of the Lowden Medical Clinic. For 25 years, Erwin and Faith spent winters at their second home in Mesa, Ariz. She was an avid reader, golfer, artist and quilter. After Erwin's death in 2011, she moved from Lowden to Keystone Place in Cedar Rapids.
Faith is survived by three children: daughters, Irma Simpson of Bradenton, Fla., and Ellen (Richard) Hull of Cedar Rapids; son, Terry (Judy) of Charlottesville, Va.; grandchildren, Aaron Hull of Cedar Rapids and Amy (Kris) Karr of Robins; and great-grandchildren, Arianna, Noah, Leah and Elijah Hull and Alexander Karr.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters.
Memorials may be directed to Zion UCC or Holden Cancer Center.
Faith donated her remains to the University of Iowa School of Medicine.
Her family extends its gratitude to St. Luke's Hospice and Keystone Place for such thoughtful care and attention to their mother and grandmother.
