Evelyn ‘Sue’ Olmstead, 100, of Cedar Rapids passed away on January 24, 2026 at Meth-Wick Community. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 7, 2026 at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Lunch will be served after the memorial. The service will be livestreamed and recorded on the church’s YouTube channel.
Sue was born April 3, 1925, in Cedar Rapids to Henry and Wilhelmina (Haldy) Geiger. She graduated from Roosevelt High School. Sue married Carrol Olmstead on October 17, 1943, in Cedar Rapids. She started working at Merchants National Bank the day after she graduated and retired from US Bank after many years of service. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she had served on church council, as a recorder, was active with Solace Servers, Comfort Makers, and several study groups; she also served as a Stephen Minister. She was active with her Roosevelt class and MNB Retiree groups. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting rugs. If you needed a specific shade of fabric, Sue likely had it. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and sharing family stories, especially those of her early years with family in the Amana Colonies.
Sue is survived by her children Tom (Dixie) Olmstead of Cedar Rapids, Steve (Audrey) Olmstead of Forrest City, Susan Padget of Swisher, and Chris (Ryan) Scott of Beaman; daughter-in-law Jo Anne Olmstead of Wabasha, MN; 11 grandchildren, Brian Padget, Mike Olmstead, Brad (Carrie) Padget, Stacy (Steve) Heston, Jeff Olmstead, Jessica (Chris) Gibbs, Sarah Olmstead, A.J. (Jessica) Scott, Amanda (Jordan) Ross, Tim Olmstead, Jonathan (Ashley) Olmstead; 19 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; sons, Jim Olmstead and Joel Olmstead; son-in-law, David Padget; granddaughter, Lindsay Olmstead; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Gibbs; brother, Henry Geiger; and sister, Lila Geiger Olmstead.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the Meth-Wick staff who treated her with loving care over the years.
Memorial contributions may be given to First Lutheran Church.
