Evelyn Newhard, 86, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 30, 2014, at the home of her son, Scott, in Van Meter following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at First Congregational Church, Anamosa, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Greg Griffin will officiate at the services. Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, is assisting the family.

Surviving are two sons, Scott (Beth), Des Moines, and Joel (MaryAnne Pauly), San Francisco; a grandson, Robert Beran, Iowa City; two brothers, Robert (Helen) Purcell and Richard (Martha) Purcell; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ivan, on March 25, 2006; and a brother, Ernest.
Evelyn Jean Purcell was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Anamosa, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Cora Walters Purcell. Evelyn graduated from Anamosa Community Schools in 1946. She married Ivan Newhard on June 6, 1948, at First Congregational Church, Anamosa. Evelyn and Ivan operated Newhard's Clothing Store in Monticello for many years.
Evelyn was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church. She sang in the church choir for over 50 years.
