EVELYN BERNICE JOHANSEN
Cedar Rapids
Evelyn Bernice Johansen, 96, of Cedar Rapids, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, at the Lisbon Rehabilitation Center in Lisbon. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private family funeral service and burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Evelyn Bernice (Knoblauch) Johansen was born Oct. 3, 1920, in David City, Neb., the daughter of Joseph and Rosa Knoblauch. Evelyn married Lester Johansen on Sept. 26, 1941, in Grant City, Mo. They lived on a farm outside of Rolfe. After Lester's return from military service, they settled in Bellaire, Texas. Evelyn attended beautician school during this time. After several years, they returned to Iowa, settling in the Cedar Rapids area in 1952. Evelyn owned and operated Jo's Beauty Salon in Cedar Rapids for many years.
Evelyn loved all music and dancing and was a member of Belles "N" Beaux Square Dancing Club. She enjoyed being by the water, boat rides and fishing. Traveling brought joy to her and she always wanted to go "somewhere." Flowers and plants were another of her many passions. Evelyn was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church, NARFE, VFW and the Widows and Widowers Group.
Evelyn is survived by her three daughters, Carol Hansen of Watervliet, N.Y., Kay (David Osterberg) Johansen of MountVernon and Nancy Johansen of Cedar Rapids; three grandsons, Brian Ball of Katy, Texas, Mark Hansen of Douglassville, Pa., and Tim Hansen of Raleigh, N.C.; and seven great-grandchildren, Briana, Diego and Kobe Ball, Zoe and Evan Hansen, and Bennett and Colin Hansen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester; brothers, Maurice and Melvin Knoblauch; a sister, Ardella White; several nephews and nieces; and her special friend and companion for years, William Pettit.
The family would like to thank the Lisbon Rehabilitation Center and hospice staff from Essence of Life Hospice for all their care and compassion. A special thanks to Home Watch staff (especially Vicki Wieser).
