Evelyn "Lyn" Louise Gates Hylbak, 90, of Mount Vernon, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, from complications of Influenza A. Visitation for Lyn will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, at Morgan Funeral Home, Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, at Community Bible Church, Mount Vernon. Burial: 2 p.m. Monday at North Prairie Cemetery, West Liberty.
Lyn is survived by her children, Lori (Robert) Burns of Pueblo, Colo., Mark Hylbak of Atlanta, Ga., and Karin Capri of Mount Vernon; and grandchildren, Greg Murphy, Che, Angela and Anthony Krumm, Robin and Ryan Burns.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Vince; a daughter, Sharae; and a brother, Gale Baldridge.
Lyn was born June 14, 1924, in Iowa City, the daughter of Charles Russell and Hallie Louise Conklin Gates. She attended Downey Grade School, Downey, and graduated from West Branch High School in 1941 and Iowa City Commercial College in 1942. Later she used those business skills to finance her college education. Lyn also attended Bethel Junior College in St. Paul, Minn. (now Bethel University), Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) in 1949.
She married Vincent Thoe Hylbak on Nov. 23, 1949, in Downey. The couple made their home in Rockford, Ill., moved to Fort Madison in 1957 and finally to Mount Vernon in 1967.
Lyn worked 20 years in the offices at the Hawkeye Record and The Sun newspapers before retiring in 1989.
She was a member of Community Bible Church and the New Century Club of Mount Vernon.
Her joys were her church, her family, traveling and her cats.
