Evelyn Bernice Conner, 92, died peacefully Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the Solon Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 5, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport Township. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, where the Catholic Daughters of America will recite a rosary at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Solon Care Center or the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.
Evelyn was born March 14, 1922, in Shueyville,
Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Rosa Gladwin Sparrgrove. She grew up in Shueyville, Solon and Ely. On Jan. 6, 1937, Evelyn married Lawrence "Larry" Conner at St. Matthias Church in Muscatine.
Evelyn trained at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where she earned her nursing license. She cared for many patients in area care facilities and Veterans Hospital.
Evelyn was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the NAIM Club, God's Helping Hands and Catholic Daughters of America. She loved to garden and cook, and volunteered with DVIP. Most important to Evelyn were her family and grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Solon Care Center for the wonderful care they provided.
Evelyn is survived by her seven children, Kay (Ray) Cambridge of North Liberty, Kathleen Mycko of Albuquerque, N.M., Larry Conner of Solon, Deb Wade of Amana, Maureen Conner (Bob Nelson) of Iowa City, Michael Conner of
Solon and Rosemarie Conner (Clint Rarick) of Oxford; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three siblings, Marvel Hill of Marion, Charles Sparrgrove Jr. of Strawberry Point and Mavis Sheely of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Colleen Lenz, and infant daughter Theresa; grandson, Sean Conner; great-grandson, Maxim Rowland; and siblings, Al, Floyd, Marie and Wilma.
