Evans, William C. 'Bill'
William C. “Bill” Evans, 90, of Iowa City, formerly of 1805 High St., in Iowa City, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at Mercy Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Rev. John Spiegel will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, with a parish vigil beginning at 6 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City.
Bill was born Oct. 4, 1920, in Rock Island, Ill., the son of Chester and Pearl (Brogla) Evans. Graduating from Washington Center High School, Bill moved to Iowa City in 1937. He served in the United States Army during World War II, 1942-1946, as a Technical Sergeant. Upon returning from military duty, Bill married Veronica Stahle at St. Mary's Catholic Church on June 25, 1946, in Iowa City.
He worked for 35 years as an electrician for Fandel Electric (Cedar Rapids), retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Iowa City American Legion, Iowa City Moose Lodge and IBEW Local No. 405. Bill was very active and a dedicated supporter of the Regina Booster Club, of which he was a 50-year member. In 1983, Bill received a distinguished service award from the Iowa High School Athletic Association for his countless hours dedicated to Regina High School athletics.
Bill is survived by his wife, Veronica of Iowa City; children, Jayne Doyle (Elizabeth Monk) of Oak Park, Ill., Joanne Shay (Steve) of Olathe, Kan., Jim Evans of Iowa City, Mary Rummelhart (Doug) of Iowa City and Nancy Doorman (Dennis) of Geneva, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Brendan, Sara, Katie, Mike, John, Tyler, Willy and Jorge; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Emma, Myles and Brody; and Bill's special buddy, Joel.
The family wishes to thank Patricia Castillo for her love, her dedication and her care given to Bill over the years.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Leo and John “Chick” Evans.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to The Regina Foundation to benefit Regina Athletics.
