Evangeline "Vee Gee" Mae (Johnson) McCort, 90, died peacefully on March 19, 2025, in her home at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, IA. She was born March 12, 1935, in Cheyenne, WY, the first child of Ethel (Jorgensen) and Henry Johnson. A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Cottage Grove Place, Building #3, 176 Cottage Grove Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
VeeGee and her family lived at Whiteman Airforce base, MO, for years while Don served in the U.S. Airforce. Upon his retirement they moved to Fayette, IA. VeeGee became a college professor at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She also taught at Longwood College, Farmville, VA, and community college in Sioux City, IA. VeeGee completed her MBA during her time in Sioux City and then decided it was time to retire.
They finally settled down in Fort Myers, FL. They had experience with the Friendship Force, an organization that sponsored home visits with people in foreign countries. They started a chapter in Fort Myers, hosted visitors, and went on exchanges in New Zealand, Germany, England, Japan, Taiwan, and Brazil.
VeeGee played serious tennis — mixed doubles women's, 50 plus women's, USTA teams and played for a national championship. She was a tennis champion, master gardener, a remarkable seamstress, and had a passion for fashion and shoes.
In 2011, after her husband passed, VeeGee decided it was time to head to Iowa to be with her only son, Glen, and his family. She became a resident of Cottage Grove Place.
Vee Gee is survived by her daughter-in-law, Karen (Sieck) McCort, grandchildren, Cara (Troy) Boubin and Mason (Samantha Cochrane) McCort.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Don McCort, son Glen McCort, parents Ethel and Henry Johnson, her in-laws Waldo and Vera McCort, her sister Ellie McCaffrey, her special "baby" sister Maddie Davis, and her grandson Dylan McCort who died way too young.
VeeGee was talented in so many ways. She had a variety of interests, an amazing sense of humor, she was always welcoming and kind to others. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
