EVA MARTINA LUKAS
Iowa City
Eva Martina Lukas, 92, of Iowa City, formerly of Marco Island, Fla., and Peoria, Ill., passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016, at Melrose Meadows, Iowa City. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Newman Catholic Student Center, Iowa City, with Father Ed Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Peoria, Ill., at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Crisis Center, Iowa City Hospice or the University of Iowa Foundation: The Retinal Research Fund.
Eva was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Velenje, Slovenia, the daughter of Martin and Cecilia (Ylicic) Sowinek. After the war, Eva enrolled in medical school of the University of Graz, Austria. There, she met Theodor (Ted) Michael Lukasiewicz, whom she married in 1954 after they both graduated. The two immigrated by boat to the United States in 1955 Eva almost five months pregnant with their first child, Michael to complete internship training in Great Falls, Mont., through a foreign exchange program.
After internship, Eva and her husband completed their residency training to become general practitioners in Peoria, so they settled there, became citizens and changed their name to Lukas. They established their medical practices and completed their family with the addition of a daughter, Maria, and later another son, Mark. Eva took time out of her practice for several years to raise her children and returned to practice in family medicine when they were older.
In 1990, Eva and her husband retired and moved to Marco Island, Fla., where Eva was quick to make new friends and loved to walk the beach. She remained on Marco Island for a couple of years after her husband died in 2010. In 2012, Eva moved to Iowa City, living in Melrose Meadows and making new friends again. Eva touched many lives in each of her hometowns.
Eva is survived by her two children, Michael Lukas (Karen Andersen Porter) of Wilmette, Ill., and Maria Lukas (Culver Boldt) of Iowa City; and three grandchildren, Katherine Lukas and Adam and Maria Boldt.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ted; infant son, Mark; and brother, Martin (Adam) Sowinek.
