Eugene "Gene" F. Olberding, 79, of Dyersville, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave. SW, in Dyersville, where a parish vigil service will be at 3 p.m., a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6 p.m. and an American Legion Post 137 service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home before the funeral service.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military honors accorded by American Legion Post 137. The Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.
Gene was born Dec. 29, 1936, on the family farm in Delaware County, the son of Andrew and Agnes (Kramer) Olberding. In 1956, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army. He married Darlene Baumler-Schirmer on June 3, 1972, at St Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. Gene worked in construction, building many of the local farm buildings, including round rafter barns. In his later years, he drove a semi and enjoyed working in his wood shop. He liked doing puzzles, playing cards and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene; six children, Amy (special friend, Jacob Pape) of Dyersville, Jason (Christy) Olberding of Marion, Lauri (Jeremy) Latteyer of Robins, Steve (Sarah) Schirmer of Balltown, Linda (Pat) Prusha of Nevada and Chris (Selene) Schirmer of Calmar, 12 grandchildren, Avery and Isaac Olberding, Alex, Emily and Amber Latteyer, Colin and Kyle Schirmer, Dillon and Marcus Prusha, Selena, Mackenzie and Tonya Schirmer; siblings, Jim (Katie) Olberding of Dyersville and Grace (Don) Hermsen of Luxemburg; and sister-in-law, Shirley Olberding of Dyersville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sarah Olberding; and siblings, Dick (Alice) Olberding and George Olberding.
